INFORMATION
The project was established in Pinsiö village west of the city of Tampere by artist Osmo Rauhala in 1987. Environmental art was not known in Finland at that time, and Rauhala contacted artists in the United States, England and the Netherlands in order to put together a professional group of people involved with public art.
The main goals of the project are to landscape damaged areas and create public and environmental art. The fundamental question concerning the relationship between man and nature is the baisis for these efforts. Since its birth in the late 80’s the project has carried out an art competition, an exhibition together with The Tampere Art Museum and the National Gallery – Contemporary Art Museum and three large permanent art pieces in the Pinsiö area together with the local communities.
The Strata Project has been supported by The Ministry of the Environment in Finland, the United Nations Environmental program and several private sponsors, but organizationally the Project is working on a voluntary basis as a non-profit organization.
